Zlín Region - Zlínský kraj
Zlín is its administrative centre of Zlín region (www.kr-zlinsky.cz). The Region consists of 4 districts - Kroměříž, Uherské Hradiště, Vsetín and Zlín. Settlements concentrate mainly in lowlands, where municipalities with up to 2000 inhabitants are mostly represented.
Zlín region covers the central part of east Moravia with rather diverse natural conditions. In its western part, there are two Moravian valley basins - the lower part of Upper-Moravian and the northern part of the Lower-Moravian basins. Towards the east, the landscape rises to mountainous ridges of the Carpathians - Beskydy, Javorníky and Bílé Karpaty. This is the reason of diversity in climatic conditions and soil types. The area of valley basins is deforested, mountainous areas are covered by vast coniferous forests.
The most important companies are in the rubber industry, general engineering, textiles, clothing, leather manufacture and electrotechnical industries. Agriculture is concentrated in lowland parts. Very good conditions (black earth, warm climate) are suitable for growing the wheat, sugar beet and brewing barley. In the mountains and on their foothills, potatoes and fodder crops are cultivated.
Valašsko is the most attractive area with lots of natural beauties and distinctive features. Its open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is among the most popular attractions. Luhačovice is a famous spa for respiratory and digestive diseases. Further main settlement centres include Uherské Hradiště, Kroměříž, Vsetín and Valašské Meziříčí.
With a view to tourism, the area of Zlín Region is divided into three tourist marketing areas: South Moravia, North Moravia and Silesia and Central Moravia.
The Bílé Karpaty area is listed in the UNESCO biosphere reserve network and, simultaneously, it is a protected landscape area. Beskydy protected landscape area is situated in the northern part of Zlín Region.
As it borders with Slovakia, a part of Zlín Region is involved in cross-border co-operation within Bílé Karpaty Euroregion.
